why i chose the fashion institute of technology as one of my reach schools...
I profiled the Fashion Institute of Technology as one of my reach schools because it’s one of the most selective design schools I’ve looked into at a 44% acceptance rate. However, I do have the GPA they’re looking for and they don’t look at SAT scores in accordance with admissions which can be beneficial. I have to sew garments as part of my admissions project though, which is a skill that I still need to develop. I toured this school a few summers back and it seems like they have very strong programs and connections within the industry. However, their campus seemed very outdated and rundown for a tech school. It is also all indoors with hardly any windows, old furnishing, and such which may get depressing in the winter months. It does not seem like the best creative atmosphere, yet their programs are still strong. They also have an abroad program (semester or summer) with sister schools in places like Florence and Milan which is something that I would like to potentially take part in during my time in college. There are many performing arts activities at F.I.T. that interest me and that I’d be happy to being a part of during my time there (which aren’t available at some of the other design schools I’m considering). The out-of-state amount for tuition and fees is a bit pricey, but they do give out at least a third of that in financial aid. I also like that there are nearly 10,000 students at this school, so it won’t feel too small or too large. Plus, the Fashion Institute of Technology is in the middle of NYC, so I’ll be able to directly benefit from access to the big city and all that it has to offer.
